Over time people became more and more mobile, coming all the way from living whole life in a single village to visiting another continents.
I’m looking forward to visiting other planets, although I’ll not be surprised if this type of tourism will not be very popular. It seems that spending vacations on other planets will be as much appealing as spending them in the barren desert if not worse. More like active volcano crater. At least as long as we speak of our solar system. Other Earth-like planets preferably with non-hostile flora and fauna should be at least as good as our national parks.
Moving people’s fleshy shells as far as Mars is still far from easy not to speak of interstellar distances. I consider boring even having to spend one hour twice a day on commuting.
Teleportation would be nice, but we already have simpler methods. Why moving my body to work, when I can work remotely. Why visiting other people for a talk when I can video-chat them? Yet this is only a part of the solution. When I call someone most of my experiences stay where I am, only part of hearing (and seeing) kinda moves to where my interlocutor resides. What if I could have all my senses experience other place. Something like people did in the Avatar movie. Maybe even having a corporeal avatar body is not necessary.
What if I wanted to have a non-bodily-present picnic on Jupiter’s moon Io. It is at least half light-hour away. Having my brain on Earth computing my consciousness would render such a leisure impossible because of an hour stimulus-reaction round-trip. As a side note, that’s why you cannot manually guide a Mars lander, you only can program it beforehand to land itself. This implies that my whole consciousness should be computed on Io for such a picnic to be of any pleasure. So the whole procedure will include a brain scan, data transfer to Io, running my consciousness there, data transfer back to Earth and incorporation of my experiences into my unaware brain, as I surely want to remember the picnic.
So now I have two thoughts. Why have a body of the flesh here on Earth when I can as well have an avatar (or some other way to experience environment) here. This will save me from scans and experience reintegrations. On the other hand, why should I be only in one place at a time? What if while I was telepresent on Io I (here on Earth) went on a concert instead of lying unconscious awaiting my mind to return. Sure, if scanning does not destroy my brain. So after consciousness reintegration I would have memories of both the concert and the picnic. Sounds twice as fun!
Maybe I’ve read to much of Greg Egan.
